Thousands of people poured into the new Lucky's Market in West Melbourne on Wednesday as the Boulder, Colorado-based grocer made a grand entrance into the Brevard County supermarket scene.

The store, located at the corner of Wickham Road and U.S. 192, was filled most of the morning as people crowded the aisles of the 36,000-square-foot former Winn-Dixie location to check out the organic offerings — something Lucky's Market specializes in — and also to taste numerous samples of meats, juices, cheeses and other delectables.

Bo Sharon, who founded Lucky's Market along with his wife, Trish, promised to keep prices as low as possible.

"We started Lucky's with the belief that natural and organic food should be available to absolutely everybody," Sharon said. "...that price should not be a reason to not eat healthy."

As part of the opening Wednesday, the Sharons also provided $10,000 in "impact grants" to two local nonprofits and promised to keep supporting local community efforts to help those in need.

The two nonprofits were Victory Kids to provide 27 young children-in-need with access to physical education and extracurricular sports in Brevard with 12-day winter break sports camps, and the Children’s Hunger Project to provide 1,500 local children with food assistance over the weekends.

What's next at Lucky's:

  • Tasting Fair 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday featuring some of Lucky’s Market’s favorite local product vendors, food samples and gift basket giveaways.
  • Reusable bag credits where shoppers reusing their shopping bags can choose to get a 10-cent credit on their purchase or make a donation to Field of Dreams, Women’s Center or Marine Resource Council.
  • Upcoming Impact Day in which 10 percent of one day’s total net sales will go to support and expand the garden and programming for students with disabilities at the Meadowlane Intermediate School.
