Firefighters douse Indialantic blaze

Beachside fire crews braved howling winds and driving rain after midnight Thursday to extinguish a blaze believed to have destroyed a greenhouse at an unincorporated address on North Riverside Drive, south of the Eau Gallie Causeway.

No residents were present and no one was injured.

Indialantic firefighters led the response around 12:30 a.m. Friday with two trucks, supported by one from Satellite Beach, at 3370 N. Riverside Drive. Brevard County Fire Rescue has suspended operations beachside as Hurricane Matthew approaches.

Wind gusting beyond 40 mph blew clouds of smoke and sent sparks flying through swaying trees.

There was little concern about the fire spreading given the very wet conditions.

But water supply from the mainland to the beachside may be cut off due to the storm, limiting water reserves and pressure.
