NWS confirms EF-0 tornado in Brevard on Tuesday

The National Weather Service confirmed touchdown of a tornado Tuesday afternoon in south Brevard.

Update, Sept. 14., 2:30 p.m.:

The National Weather Service in Melbourne has confirmed that an EF-0 tornado, with an estimated peak wind of 75-85 MPH touched down in southern Brevard County on Tuesday.

According to a public information statement put out by the NWS on Wednesday, the tornado was on the ground for 3 miles beginning in the St. Sebastian River Preserve State Park area to an area 2 miles northwest of Barefoot Bay.

No injuries were caused by the tornado, but they did say that there was damage to an area that included Orchid Tree Drive, Cottonwood Drive and Crepe Myrtle Drive.

In that area, the NWS says one home had a partial roof removal and its patio destroyed while another had an RV toppled onto its side. They also report numerous large tree branches down.

Update, 3:45 p.m.

A tornado was confirmed by radar at 1:52 p.m. by radar southwest of Micco Road, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Derrick Weitlich. 

Two people, including one who is a private meteorologist, visually confirmed the tornado. 

Weitlich said the circulation appeared to pass over rural areas and there are no reports of damage at this time.

The weather service also says a flood advisory remains in effect until 5 p.m.

Update, 2:27 p.m.

The tornado warning has been allowed to expire. Witnesses say a tornado briefly touched down in a rural area west of Barefoot Bay. Reports of damage were not immediately available.

A significant weather advisory remains in effect, as the National Weather Service continues to track strong storms moving north at 20 miles per hour. The advisory warns of possible wind gusts of up to 50 miles per hour associated with these storms.

Areas affected may include Grant-Valkaria, Barefoot Bay, Malabar, Sebastian Inlet, Roseland and Micco.

Update, 2:05 p.m.

A confirmed tornado was spotted over Barefoot Bay headed toward Grant. Possible areas affected include Grant Road, First Street and Berry Road. Residents are advised to take cover now.

The Melbourne office of the National Weather Service has posted a tornado warning for portion of South Brevard until 215 this afternoon.

A storm capable of producing a tornado was spotted on radar near Micco and Barefoot Bay, moving north at 15 mph.

The weather service warns anyone in the storm's path to take immediate cover.
