A Melbourne police officer laying down stop sticks was injured after getting struck by an oncoming vehicle during an attempted traffic stop overnight.

The unidentified officer was not seriously injured and the driver of the vehicle was taken into custody.

"The officer was banged up pretty good. The suspect hit him and knocked about 20 feet," Lt. L.A. Turner said.

Octavius Murrell Weaver, 26, was identified as the driver and charged with attempted murder on a law enforcement officer, reckless driving, aggravated fleeing and driving with a suspended license after Melbourne officers said the truck he was in flipped over during an ensuing chase.

Weaver and his 24-year-old passenger were not injured, Turner said.

The incident unfolded just before 1 am when officers spotted a Ford sport track truck reported stolen traveling at a high rate of speed along U.S. 1, said Turner.

Weaver continued to drive past an attempted traffic stop, turning east on University Boulevard and headed to U.S. 1. An officer deployed stop sticks, but Weaver then swerved to avoid the spiked strips, striking the officer instead, Police said.

The black truck continued onto Babcock Street when officers used their patrol cars to force the truck to stop.

Weaver then lost control of the truck, rolling over, police said.  "Neither he nor his passenger were hurt at all," Turner said, adding both were quickly taken into custody and transported to the hospital as a precaution.

The injured officer was released from Holmes Regional Medical Center about 5 am, officials said.

Officers are attempting to determine if Weaver is connected with the vehicle being stolen. Two firearms were also recovered once the truck - which was reported stolen out of Rockledge - was turned upright but it wasn't immediately known who they belonged to, officers said.
