Brevard County Ocean Rescue is investigating an incident involving a surfer who was apparently bitten by something — likely a shark — while wading in the water just off of Pelican Beach Park in Satellite Beach on Tuesday.

The surfer turned down an offer by Brevard County Fire Rescue to go to the hospital for further treatment. The man had "wounds indicative of a small shark bite or similar toothed sea creature," according to a tweet from Brevard County Fire Rescue's spokesperson.

Lifeguards first responded to the man around 2:55 p.m. and said he was in the water when the injury occurred.

Images from the scene provided by NPI Productions / Dalton Smith show paramedics treating the injured person's gory leg injuries, which include the outline of a bloody bite mark along the swimmer's calf.

The waters in the area are routinely populated with bull, lemon and other shark species. The "grip and go" attack appears to be the fourth confirmed shark bite to take place off Brevard’s 72-mile shoreline this year.
