Chamber set to honor Space Coast military members

J.B. Kump

Next month, the Space Coast will be pioneering an event that many are saying should become an annual event and a model for other communities. The first "Space Coast Military Appreciation Day" is Saturday, May 17 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The event will take place at Searstown Mall on U.S. 1 in Titusville. The vision of the organizers is that future events will see a variety of activities at different locations throughout the county. The event begins with a 5K run/walk and will feature exhibits, booths of all kinds, benefit evaluations for veterans, drill team performances, music and more. Drawings will be held and prizes awarded to military card holders, veterans and ROTC cadets.

The Space Coast has a long, rich history of participation in and contributions to the military heritage of our nation. Many from the Space Coast have served. Some veterans have returned home and some come from other locations and have retired here. Of course, some of our military never returned home after their service, or they came back with physical or psychological wounds — all to guarantee our freedom and our way of life.

Our community is better because of our military heritage, and our nation is more secure because of the Space Coast's contributions to the military. This is one way to pause from our normal activities and, in some very symbolic but genuine ways, say thank you and give public recognition to those who are serving or have served, and to the family members who supported them.

The grass roots committee organizing the event has pledged to give any proceeds, over and above the cost of the event, to the Junior ROTC units on the Space Coast so their cadets can travel to competitions in military drill, orienteering, marksmanship, etc.

Were you in the military? Do you know someone from or living on the Space Coast who was in uniform or working in a civilian job in support of the military? This is an opportunity to recognize and say "thanks!"

Get involved in this great celebration. There is nothing quite like it in all of the Space Coast. For more information, visit spacecoastmilitaryappreciation.com.
