2 FLORIDA TODAY writers win SFJ awards
Two FLORIDA TODAY features writers placed in the 26th annual Excellence in Features Journalism, the Society for Features Journalism announced Monday.
Christina LaFortune won first place in video storytelling for her video "Making Ukrainian Easter Eggs." Judge's comments: "It's impressive that this video was shot on an iPhone by a person whose primary job doesn't involve photography or videography."
LaFortune, a news assistant, hosts "The FLORIDA TODAY Show," which airs at 5:30 p.m. Sundays on WEFS. Her 5 Things column runs Sundays in the Style section.
"It is an honor to be recognized," LaFortune said. "I'm grateful to the team at FLORIDA TODAY for giving me the skills to share my heritage in an entertaining way through video storytelling. And I am grateful to the Society for Features Journalism for recognizing me among so many talented feature writers and storytellers."
Sara Paulson won third place for her Momsense columns in the general commentary category. Judge's comments: "Sara is funny as she reflects on parenthood, and she's not afraid to share her painful, personal history to connect with and help others."
Paulson, a Style reporter, also is a "News in :90" host, FLORIDA TODAY's 90-second news updates that air online.
SFJ, formerly known as the American Association of Sunday and Feature Editors, will announce the winners of its 2014 Excellence-in-Features Awards at its convention in Nashville, Tenn., in August. The Society for Features Journalism has honored three Pulitzer Prize winners and three Pulitzer finalists as part of its 2014 Excellence-in-Features Awards contest.
Nine newspapers were recognized for outstanding features sections and journalists in 14 categories with more than 600 entries.
