Busy weekend for fishermen this weekend

The largest kingfish, above, dolphin, wahoo, cobia and grouper are each worth $1,000 in this weekend’s 30th Annual CFOA Fishing Tournament.

Offshore anglers hoping to compete for more than $10,000 in cash and prizes will be keeping a close eye on the weather for this weekend's 30th Annual Central Florida Offshore Anglers Fishing Tournament.

The event held at Blue Points Marine at Port Canaveral kicks off Friday night with a captains meeting at Fishlips restaurant starting at 6 p.m.

The event pays three places ($1,000 for first, $500 for second and $250 for third) for five eligible species: grouper, dolphin, kingfish, cobia and wahoo. Other divisions include female and junior anglers. The entry fee is $150, including a membership in CFOA.

Tournament organizers are currently keeping an eye on the weather forecast for Saturday and a weather decision will be made at the mandatory captains meeting. If the event is postponed it will be rescheduled to Sunday. Regardless of which day the event is fished, lines in is scheduled for 6 a.m, with the scales opening at Blue Points Marina at 3 p.m. and closing at 6 p.m.

Inaugural Florida Tech Football Fishing Tournament

Don't forget the first-ever FIT Football Fishing Tournament, also being held Saturday at Jetty Park at Port Canaveral. The event — which costs $300 per boat — will kick off with a mandatory meeting at Mercedes Audi Porsche of Melbourne Friday night at 7 p.m.

The weigh-in begins Saturday at noon at Jetty Park in Port Canaveral running until 4 p.m.

Amendment 1 Rally

A non-partisan rally to raise awareness about Amendment 1 and the voters' desire to have legislators follow the amendment's intent of funding water and land conservation in the upcoming special session is scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. at Grill's Riverside in Melbourne.

The event is part of a state-wide series of rallies. Featured speakers at the Melbourne portion of the event include Dr. Leesa Suoto, Executive Director of the Marine Resources Council, environmental attorney Clay Henderson and Tony Sasso, former member of the Florida House of Representatives. Florida Senator Thad Altman is also scheduled to attend and speak.
