Four more schools end spring football Friday

The spring football season that began on April 27 ends today as four Brevard County teams will complete their practice periods with action on game fields.

Two, playoff teams Titusville and Heritage, will meet on the Panthers' home field in Palm Bay at 7 p.m. The other two, Astronaut and Rockledge, are programs with tremendous history that have struggled to produce winning seasons in recent years.

"We've got to get back to playing winning football," War Eagles coach Randy Hallock said Thursday. His team hosts East River tonight at 7. "We've got 26, 28 returning lettermen and 16 or 17 returning starters. We've had high expectations for them this offseason, and they've come through."

Hallock said his best returning depth is at skill positions.

"We've got decent depth all the way around. We've got eight of our top nine linemen back."

That's not the case at Heritage, where replacing linemen was a top priority for head coach Mark Ainsley.

"Everybody replaces one or two kids, but we're replacing four," he said. "We had three seniors on the offensive line."

The fourth loss there was Shamar Davis, who moved to tight end. Now in his second season, Ainsley also spent time adding elements to the defensive scheme, and he was looking for receivers. Though he felt good about the secondary and linebacking corps, he sought more depth.
