Four Brevard teams have top state GPAs

Four Brevard County high school sports teams had the highest cumulative grade point average in their classification, winning FHSAA Academic Team Champion Awards for the spring season.

Melbourne boys tennis, with a 3.885 GPA, was first in Class 3A. Rockledge, with a 3.672, led 5A softball. Covenant Christian's 3.543 was first in 2A baseball, and the Viera boys track and field GPA of 3.405 was first in 4A.

FHSAA Academic Team Champion winners must have at least a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. All team members are included in the calculation. Schools earn plaques for each qualifying team.

The FHSAA also announced the top 10 schools from each classification for the entire academic year. Points are accumulated for each sport's finish in the academic standings. Viera placed third in Class 7A with 90 points, with Lakewood Ranch (136) first. In 5A, Titusville was fourth with 74 points and Rockledge placed 10th (41). West Shore finished fifth (87 points) in 4A and Covenant Christian sixth (38) in 2A.

Several other spring teams met the 3.0 threshold to receive FHSAA recognition, including Covenant Christian softball (3.723) and Satellite boys tennis (3.608).

Some schools had multiple qualifying teams. From Rockledge: baseball (3.154), boys tennis (3.561), girls tennis (3.787), boys track and field (3.27), girls track and field (3.41), boys lacrosse (3.281) and girls lacrosse (3.289).

From Titusville: baseball (3.425), softball (3.092), boys tennis (3.587), girls tennis (3.577), boys track and field (3.267) and girls track and field (3.559).

From Viera: baseball (3.257), softball (3.54), boys tennis (3.71), girls tennis (3.509), girls track and field (3.356), boys lacrosse (3.121) and girls lacrosse (3.512).

From West Shore: boys tennis (3.674), girls tennis (3.649), boys track & field (3.518), girls track and field (3.715), boys lacrosse (3.401) and girls lacrosse (3.602).

Mustangs runner signs locally

Merritt Island's Casey Orlando has signed to run cross country and track for Florida Tech. She was a four-year letterwinner for those sports as well as swimming. She ran on four district and regional champion cross country teams, and her personal best of 18:59 for the 5,000-meter races came in 2014.

Pauley retires from Heritage

Bob Pauley has retired from the Brevard County school system. Pauley coached football, basketball, golf, tennis, baseball, softball and track and field for 35 years in the area. Prior to coaching at Heritage, his coaching stops included Bayside, Cocoa Beach, Eau Gallie, Florida Air and Palm Bay.

Satellite to host football camp

There will be a football camp for children ages 7-13 at Satellite High beginning June 22 and concluding June 26. Registration is available through Satellite Beach recreation at 321-773-6458.
