Hundreds gather to say goodbye to Fidgi

Somehow the rain seemed fitting on Monday night as hundreds filed into the Brownlie-Maxwell Funeral Home to say goodbye to Fidgi Haig.

Throughout the three visitation hours, the rain came and went, as did the people that Fidgi touched through his years in Brevard County.

His Florida Tech women's soccer team gathered outside, all wearing the familiar maroon polos, waiting to go in and remember their coach as a group.

Former players gathered outside hugging, talking about the man who was so much more than a coach to them.

Among them was Ashlyn Harris, a former Satellite High player who was recently named to the United States women's soccer team.

"We are all indebted to him for letting us live out our dream of playing college soccer," former player Jennifer Gillette said Saturday. "He is the glue in all of the friendships we have with one another."

Everyone was sharing stories, smiles and hugs as they waited for their turn to say goodbye.

It is never easy and with someone as special as Fidgi Haig, it seems a bit harder.

But Monday was the start. Today will be another step as a Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at the Holy Name of Jesus Church in Indialantic.

At the funeral home, the Orlando City Development team walked up and reminded everyone that we were not the only people lucky enough to have him in our lives.

Fidgi's team, wearing the now familiar purple jerseys from the Orlando City Youth Soccer's (OCYS) Elite Clubs National League program, stood patiently waiting for their turn to say goodbye.

Like everyone who made their way to the funeral home Monday evening, they will never forget the impact that Fidgi Haig made on their lives.
